The SAS6160 switch extends the capabilities of SAS to direct-attached storage systems by allowing multiple servers to connect to one or more independent external storage systems. When used with JBOD (Joint Box Drive) or RBOD (RAID Controller Based On Demand) arrays, the switch supports up to 1000 SATA and SAS device addresses, allowing users to have more SAS connections and reduce storage latency. A single SAS switch can also address multiple storage classes, supporting composite systems of mixed 3Gb/s and 6Gb/s SATA and SAS end devices. Additionally, support for active cabling allows LSI SAS switches to be placed up to 25 meters apart, a distance four times greater than traditional passive copper cabling.
