Cisco Catalyst 3850 Series Next-Generation Enterprise-Class Switches are stackable managed switches that provide a single physical infrastructure for wired and wireless networks. The Catalyst 3850 Switch has built-in functionality of a wired and wireless LAN controller. It also supports unified and consistent intelligence, network visibility, and analytics needed for accelerated diagnostics and troubleshooting. The platform is built using next-generation Unified Access Data Plane (UADP) ASICs that can process wired and wireless network data. In addition, the new switch supports QoS with the ability to fine-tune across the entire wired and wireless infrastructure. Switch stacking is implemented on the new and improved Cisco StackWise-480 technology. Cisco Catalyst 3850 Series Switches support IEEE 802.3at Power Over Ethernet Plus (PoE+), modular and replaceable network modules, redundant fans, and power supplies.

There are three versions of Cisco 3850 Series software available to choose from:
LAN Base: Enterprise access layer 2 switching featuresIP Base: Enterprise access layer 3 switching featuresIP Services: Advanced enterprise layer 3 switching (IPv4 and IPv6) features

LAN Base offers advanced intelligent services that include comprehensive L2 functions, up to 255 VLANs.
IP Base provides entry-level enterprise services in addition to all the features of LAN Base with 1000 VLANs. IP Base also includes support for wireless controller functionality (agent mobility and controller role mobility; an additional license for the access point required for the controller to manage access points), routed access, intelligent operations, FnF, and so on.
IP Services provides a full range of enterprise services that include advanced Layer 3 features such as EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, PIM, and IPv6 routing such as OSPFv3 and EIGRP v6. All software feature sets support advanced security and QoS-based MQC.
Cisco Catalyst 3850 switches with the LAN Base feature set can only be stacked with other Cisco Catalyst 3850 LAN Base switches. The same applies to IP Base and IP Services. A mixed stack of LAN Base switches with IP Base or IP Services is not supported.
All switches have the ability to upgrade software with Cisco licenses.
