The key components of any M-Series router are the Packet Forwarding Engine (PFE) and the Routing Engine (RE). Packet Forwarding Engine is responsible for packet forwarding. Physically, PFE consists of interface cards (PICs), baskets for installing interface cards - FPCs, a system control and forwarding board (control/system/forwarding board) and specialized chips. Routing Engine creates routing tables and manages routing protocols, and also manages the router as a whole.
